Church Message From the Minister’s Study…Found in the delightful hymn from “Voices United” are the words: “God of the sparrow, God of the whale, God of the swirling stars, How does the creature say Awe, how does the creature say Praise.” It seems that many people that I meet outside of the church, are adamant about being “spiritual” and yet in no way “Religious.” At the same time there are others for whom the church and one’s own religious life are very central, and in fact, help define who they are. Bridging the gap between these two groups is both a challenge and a great source of inspiration for me. Case in point has been the amazing “Spirituality and the Arts” series organized by Marie Shwaluk, that we in our “2B churches” have witnessed this Spring. I was most excited when Marie first began to investigate the idea of exploring our faith and spirituality within the context of the arts. Needless to say, I had no idea what was in store. Many of you have long known of some of our very talented folk in our Bowman-Bethesda family, while I am still learning. Beginning with Ron Coltman’s demonstration of how he designs mandolins to experiencing the fascinating and imaginative floral designs of Joan Lindley, we have truly been blessed beyond words by their thoughtful presentations. On another Sunday, to view all of the beautiful and imaginative quilts created by so many of our ladies—blew my mind—when I saw them all displayed in Bethesda’s sanctuary. They truly were works of fine art. I was only sorry they could not have remained on display for a few more days so that others in our community could have seen what talented people we have in our 2B family! The other Sunday, I grew very envious—to say the least—upon viewing the various black and white as well as colour photography display in the “Phenomenal Photography” presentation of another two of our talented people—Nell Spies and William Szigeti. It is my hope that Bowman and Bethesda churches will continue to be places where people of all ages and stages in their faith journey can come and ask questions and explore their faith together. Part of this is creating worship that is grounded in both celebration and gratitude each Sunday, enabling us to connect with God, our Creator and Source. May we continue to be grateful for God’s wondrous works as we experience the breathtaking wonders of God’s creation all around us in the world, as well as in the lives of one another, so that together we might ever praise our Creator, in word and in prayerful deed. |
